Project Example - Fire Alarm Panel Replacement

Site - Sports stadium

Location - Bedfordshire

Client - Surrey Based FM provider

The Fire alarm panel that was installed in the above premises was in generally poor condition. It had been experiencing false alarms, software errors and user control difficulties.
During a service visit our engineer noted that a number of field devices had missing location details from the system programming. If one of these devices had entered a fault or ‘Fire’ condition the actual location of the event would have been unknown, potentially putting building occupants in danger and hindering site staff and attending emergency services.
In addition to these issues it was also found the access to the system software and technical support was restricted due to the panel type and age.

On acceptance of our proposal the existing control panel and repeater units, were removed and replaced with a Vector Addressable panel and Repeater units manufactured by:
Haes Systems Ltd. The Vector system supplied was of an open protocol software type which enables easy modifications to the program, should it be required in the future.

It was found that the original main Fire panel had been retro-fitted with a number of Fireman Switch facilities. These switches were poorly installed and were actually crooked on the panel facia. We contacted the manufacturer and requested a bespoke unit with these facilities added neatly on production, the unit was then fitted by our engineers. Our client also requested we provided and fitted a built in event printer and created space for some larger back up batteries.

This project was completed on time and within budget, and equally importantly to our client's complete satisfaction. We were later informed by our client that by choosing Multi-tech Fire and Security's bid, they made a cost saving was of around 33%.

Project Example - CCTV System for Special Project

Site - Private Compound Factory Complex

Location - Colchester, Essex

Client - South London Based- Electrical Consultancy

A request was received to provide a CCTV solution for a special project located in Colchester. The main roles of the system are:

  • To monitor the progress of works, provide recorded images for reviewing purposes for use by the Project engineering team.
  • To provide an additional supplementary security measure for the compound.
The system needed to be simple to operate, robust enough for site conditions and be easy to dismantle at the end of the project.

To accomplish the client's requirements we installed 3 cameras with Day/Night facilities.
Specialised camera brackets were utilised and manufactured to achieve suitable mounting on existing structures around the site. A Digital video recorder manufactured by Dowshu Ltd and a flat high resolution colour monitor were installed to provide the viewing, recording and camera pan, tilt and zoom- control facilities.
Images were able to be removed from the system by on site staff, when required via the recording unit’s built in usb port and cd/rw.

Project Example - Maintenance Savings

Site - Private Office Complex

Location - Reading ,Berkshire

Client - Building management company

The above site was receiving a poor level of customer service from its original maintenance provider, who was regularly over charging them for maintenance and repairs.

The fire alarm system installed on site was of a managed protocol type, with spares only being available from a very limited number of outlets. A number of intermittent faults were present on the fire alarm system and the original provider had recommended that a new system was required. This would have course incurred a major cost to the client.
A service agreement was undertaken on the system by us and when the intermittent faults re occurred a Multi-tech engineer attended on a callout. During the callout visit the engineer traced the faults to a couple of loose connections on the field wiring. Once these connections were tightened the panel remained clear of the faults and no longer required replacement.

Over the first year of the contract period, it was noted that a number of the detectors were being affected by dust build up, in several site locations. The previous provider had been known to replace these detectors at regular intervals at considerable cost to the client. The Multi-tech solution was to incorporate more engineering time into the maintenance schedule to enable monitoring and cleaning of the relevant detectors.

This solution proved to be more economical for the client as it reduced the number of callouts for the system and the need for detector replacement considerably. The contract with this client has now been in place for 2-3 years with only a handful of detectors being replaced during this period.

This site currently has the following items covered by a Multi-tech Service contract:

Fire Alarm System, Extinguishers and CCTV System.

24hr Callout- Enhanced Response within 5 hrs

Project Example - Maintenance Savings

Site - 2 x Private Office Complex

Location - Weybridge,Surrey

Client - Facilities Management Co- based in Basingstoke/Southampton

A request was received to provide service on the fire and security systems for two modern office buildings in Weybridge, Surrey.

Currently under contract with Multitech are the following systems;

Fire Alarms (Protec and Gents), Extinguishers,Intruder Alarms,CCTV and Water Detection

The fire alarm systems in both of these buildings were of closed and managed protocol types with restrictions on part availability and access to software. By using an experienced engineering team and by having close relationships with our suppliers, Multi-tech have been able to obtain spares and support these systems fully.

Although the cost for spares on this type of systems is generally governed by their limited availability, the client has still managed to achieve savings due to our competitive rates. Experience suggests that the Multi-tech labour rates can be up to 50% cheaper than some of our competitors' service offerings on these particular brands of systems.
